Women of the Word Gathered and Were Blessed

by Mary Ellen Evans

In a change of topic from previous years, this year’s Women of the Word (WoW) looked at our spiritual gifts. Due to the controversy over speaking in tongues, it is a topic widely untaught in our brotherhood. Scripture, however, has a lot to say about spiritual gifts. We find lists of them in Romans 12, I Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4. There are also passing references to them in a number of other passages throughout the New Testament. Those in attendance learned that spiritual gifts are gifts of God’s grace and that we all have at least one. They are not given as a reward for anything, nor do they indicate a level of spirituality or faith. They learned there is a variety of gifts and no gift is more important than another (1 Cor. 12:12ff). Most important of all, it was shown that spiritual gifts serve two purposes: to bring glory to God and to aid in the functioning of the church so that it can do God’s work. We will be most effective and feel more joy and satisfaction if we work within the areas of our gifts.

As most of us know, it takes many people to put on an event and WoW is no exception. Women’s Ministry and especially WoW’s coordinator this year, Mary Ellen Evans, wish to thank the following people who made the event possible by serving in various capacities: A big thank you to the office staff for taking reservations, and making copies of the materials and to Mary McNeill for arranging childcare. Lori Stover did the advertising and also helped her mom, Nan Blount, with the decorations. Janelle Jackson chaired the registration and security committee. Mary Sue Lemmon and her crew of Judy Patrick, Janice Grant, Brenda Hershey, Rachelyn Hershey and Janelle Jackson prepared the food and worked in the kitchen. Sandy Fricks and Pat Jenkins worked as the cleanup crew. Judy Newton led us in song and Betsey Tonne and Myrl Betts led our prayers. Your time and effort made for a great evening for all who attended.
